It feels really different. I think it's well-intentioned; people are right to worry that talking about geoengineering might reduce the effort to cut emissions. I don't think this concern about moral hazard is a valid reason not to do research. There were people who argued that we shouldn't allow the AIDS triple-drug cocktail to be distributed in Africa because it would be misused, creating resistance. Others argued against implementation of airbags, because people would drive faster. There is a long history of arguing against all sorts of potentially risk-reducing technologies because of the potential for risk compensation - the possibility that people will change behavior by taking on more risks. I think it's an ethically confused argument. For me, the most serious concern is some entities - like big fossil-fuel companies that have a political interest in blocking emissions cuts - will attempt to exploit the potential of geoengineering as an argument against emissions cuts.|If you ever watch the financial news, you've seen reporters talking about NASDAQ stocks. They are standing in front of a big wall of information showing stock quotes and market trends, the latest details of the day's electronic trading. These reporters are all working out of a facility in New York City called the NASDAQ MarketSite broadcast studio, located in the southeast corner of Times Square. The facility is pretty complex: At any given time, it can host dozens of reporters simultaneously and send direct feeds out to all of their separate news organizations. In this article, we'll go behind the scenes to learn about the technology that makes such a sophisticated studio possible. The station has a newsroom. A studio where the news anchors read the news. The output of this studio goes to two places. First, to a local broadcast antenna; second, to the local cable company. Inside the newsroom, there are people operating teleprompters, cameras, lights, audio equipment and so on. The Coppingers suggest that some wolves "domesticated themselves." When humans went from mobile hunter/gatherer societies to sedentary villagers, they created a new ecological niche for neighboring wolves. The traditional niche for wolves is a forest predator of herbivores (plant-eaters) such as deer and elk. This niche requires wolves to be large, strong, innovative and able to learn by example. Humans living together in a group produce food scraps and other waste, which represents a valuable food source for animals. Wolves living near people began taking advantage of these resources, and the boldest wolves got the most and survived the best. By the time wolf pups are 19 days old, they are becoming suspicious of strangers. In contrast, dogs (like this Chihuahua mix) are willing to make connections with people up until 4 months of age. Studies with captive wolves demonstrate that while you can raise wolves to be somewhat tolerant of people, they retain a suspicious nature and are extremely difficult to train.|Wall Street’s main benchmarks fell sharply Thursday as investors grappled with renewed anxiety over geopolitical tensions between Russia. Ukraine following a warning from President Joe Biden that military action by the Kremlin appeared imminent. The S&P 500 plunged more than 2% to 4,380.04, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 623 points - or 1.8% - to 34,311.18, recording its worst day since Nov. 26, 2021. The Nasdaq Composite erased nearly 2.9%, falling to 13,716.72. The Russia-Ukraine conflict also weighed on oil and bond yields. Crude oil declined 2.15% to $91.65 per barrel, while the 10-year U.S. The conflict has added a fresh headwind for markets already bracing for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates as it looks to tighten monetary conditions to mitigate surging inflationary pressures. Fears that the Kremlin would green light a move to force in on its neighboring country build on the existing worries around central bank policies due to the potential of military action to exacerbate inflation and spur other economic disruptions. alex jones joe rogan
